New Update to 8145, 8147 Electronic Points Boxes

Since last year we had a possible problem crop up on 8145 boxes - FET failures!(what are FET's?) After analyzing several damaged units, the mechanism was characterized as a "Start Up" failure. If the FET failed, it only did so at start up. This type of failure was attributed to the inability of the internal power supply to completely turn on when the coils shorting clips were pulled. An update was incorporated in Oct 99 that does not allow the FETs to turn on until the power supply is fully operational.

Since that time, we have not seen any similar failures. This update comes with a small tradeoff - a higher starting RPM. The unit will now need 220 -250 crankshaft RPM to start the engine; however, most 48volt starting packs will meet this requirement and 36 volt systems may be marginal at best. It is our understanding that most alcohol teams operate on 36 volts vs. 48 volts. Battery pack changes might be necessary for optimum starting reliability.

How do you know if your units are updated? If your unit has an "X" code on the backing plate next to the date code, it already has this update.

These changes are being incorporated into a new P.C. board on PN 8145 starting on date code I8 and PN 8147. How do I get my unit updated? Ship to MSD Ignition:
